Our History...

The first meetings of FMCE were held in early 1988 with representatives from several birding and nature groups and other local organizations concerned about the environment.  Our main concern was the loss of wildlife habitat and open space so the main focus was on land use and preserving open space.  It was later broadened to include preservation of farmland and fighting urban sprawl in the Monroe County area.  Members wanted to share information, support each other’s issues and to educate the public and elected officials about environmental issues.  We have had many speakers at our meetings so that we could become more educated about environmental issues.

Over the years we have written many letters to the editor, to public officials and government agencies.  We have spoken at public hearings, had exhibits and information tables at events, and held public forums on a variety of issues such as preservation of open space, wildlife habitat and farmland, wind power, biofuels, hydrofracking, the NYS energy plan, water, and invasive species.

Many people have come to FMCE for help and support with their environmental concerns and issues and we have worked with them. FMCE has been very involved with local park issues and county park master plans.  While the focus has been on land use issues in the Monroe County area, we have also worked on statewide issues and broader concerns about water quality, the Great Lakes, climate change and energy.
